AT THE CHILDREN’S JAZZ CHOIR OF NYC
ABOUT OUR DIRECTOR
The Children's Jazz Choir of NYC was founded in 2014 by Heidi Siegell, who has had a great love of jazz since she was first introduced to the genre in her high school jazz band (trombone!) and jazz choir. Heidi is a singer, songwriter and composer. She has performed throughout North America and Canada, and she has been a featured singer on numerous albums. Her original music has been heard on stage and in films. Her 2014 album of original songs (many of them jazzy), In Stillness: Lullabies and Meditations for All Ages, won the Gold Mom’s Choice Award, the National Parenting Publications Honors Award and the Creative Child Magazine Preferred Choice Award. Her previous album of original songs, US Lonely People, also gained critical acclaim.
Heidi lives in the Theater District of NYC with her husband and daughter. She has taught voice and songwriting to students of all ages for over 20 years in private lessons and classes. She also works as an artist in residence in schools around New York City.
At the Children's Jazz Choir of NYC, kids learn about jazz, vocal technique, performance and more! Singers get a lot of personal attention and solo opportunities as they build a warm, supportive community.

Private Singing Lessons available for all ages

The choices of songs are a great mix of standards and slightly challenging - just right for my 5-year old. I know we struck gold with this class because I catch my daughter singing these songs all the time unconsciously. You should see the smiles on people's faces walking down the sidewalk.
My son enjoyed singing with the choir and learning about jazz musicians/singers. He came home excited and enthusiastic about the new songs he learned!
I have nothing but positive things to say about my daughter's entire jazz choir experience. I love that she is exposed to a new genre of music and to classic songs. I love that she has the confidence to perform in front of a crowd and gets to be part of a performance group. I love that it is nurturing and celebrates the unique contributions that each child can make. There is no one-up-manship in choir and that can rarely be said for child activities these days.
My son made new friends, enjoyed each class and had fun!
I love how happy it makes my daughter. I love how it has improved her ear and her confidence. I love how you find a way to feature each child but also teach them the joy of working as a cohesive ensemble. The program is terrific!
I enjoyed the songs, friendships that were made, the connection in the voices. We love the fact that our daughter is not as shy as before. This choir gave her a lot of confidence.
The jazz choir has been such a breath of fresh air after dealing with all of my older daughter's activities for the past few years, with each kid trying to out-belt and out-do the next. As opposed to that me-me-me scene, your jazz choir emphasizes a love of music, collaboration, cheering others on, and above all, having fun singing. I'm so glad you started this group!
Jazz Choir gives me tips and helps me with my singing. Also, it gives me the chance to make new friends. I feel that Heidi really works hard to make this group happen and make us better singers. My favorite part is warm up because I feel that Heidi does it in a fun but helpful way. At the end of the semester, we have a celebration and it shows that we've worked hard and put together all of our work, and it makes us feel proud.
My daughter has been in the Children's Jazz Choir of NYC for two years, and it has been a great experience! Recently she took private singing lessons, too, with Heidi to prepare her for an audition at a professional performing arts school. Heidi’s techniques are fantastic. She helped my child tune and refine her singing voice for the singing part of the audition. What is wonderful about Heidi is her palette of techniques and her way of cultivating and improving a child’s specific voice. After working with Heidi, my child was comfortable with her voice and well prepared for her audition - AND she was accepted into the performing arts school! We will continue to work with her.
It was a fantastic and positive overall experience. My daughter gained so much confidence as a performer and in general."
My daughter always looks forward to going to rehearsal and always comes back in a great mood. And, I get a real kick out of walking around the city with her singing jazz classics...
